Thirukural written by Thiruvalluvar consists of three books, the first book Aram (Dharma or Way), the second on Porul (material or artha) and the third Inbam (Joy or Kama). There are 37 chapters in the first book, the first four or called Payiram Prefactory material, on the next twenty-Ill Aram (Dharma's head of household) and on the next thirteen Turavaram (the path of renunciation). The second book on Porul contains seventy chapters, the first twenty dealing with the kings and their duties, the thirty-two chapters with other matters relating to the state, and thirteen next, with various concerns. The third book contains 25 chapters on Inbam, the first seven being the pre marital love (Kalavu) and the next eighteen on marital love. There are 133 chapters in total, each chapter contains ten couplets in the meter known as the Kural and the work itself is now called by that name.
